Apple breaks a new record!

The well known App Store is only just a little more than one year old. And since the end of last week, it officially counts with more than 100,000 applications available for downloading… And this figure doesn’t take in account all the applications being reviewed before they are published (which takes two weeks… and them probably represents a few thousands more, at least…).

This confirms the huge number of developers working to make this number grow. And as you can guess, it doesn’t seem to be a slowing-down phenomenon… On the contrary, the store is spreading exponentially…

And this skyrocketing number will be nothing if the apps were only offered but left without any interest from the iPhone/iPod users… But the situation is the exact contrary: one month ago, Steve Jobs (Apple’s CEO) announced that the meter had passed the two billion applications downloaded.

Among these 100,000 applications, the iPhone/iPod users can find the applications of print publishers willing to go mobile , the applications of brands using Smartphones applications as a powerful advertising channel (like Volkswagen who recently launched an iPhone racing game as the exclusive promotion campaign of the Volkswagen GTI 2010), applications of all prices and all utilities…

Beyond the impressiveness of these huge numbers, I cannot help but wondering, as I guess lots of people did when learning this amazing news… Is it really a good thing for Apple and the iPhone/iPod users? Aren’t these thousands of developers only drowning some really interesting applications among useless, redundant ones… making it more and more difficult for sellers to promote the few applications they really believe to be great products, and for purchasers to find what they could be really interested in?
