The mobile phone market is fine. The Smartphone one? Even finer!

Today, Gartner (the world's leading information technology research and advisory company) published a report about the mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2009. Basically, you can keep in mind that it is in good health…

The total worldwide sales of mobile phones in this period nearly reached 308.9 million units (think about it… it means more than 100 million phones sold per month... I know the world is big but… don´t you think it is huge??). This figure represents a 0.1% increase in comparison with the period of 2008. Good news for the market!

In addition, lots of new mobile devices were announced during these three months, which is to say they will be ready to enter the market just before the holiday season in the fourth quarter… Which is, of course, the big season for mobile phones sales… Daddy, Daddy, will Santa Claus bring me the new Blackberry this year? Of course he will, dear…

And precisely, Blackberry and other Smartphone are getting the lion’s share of this increase of the mobile phone market: this segment continues being the fastest-growing one, with a 12,3% increase from the third quarter of last year, and without seeming to be reaching saturation point. Among this segment, it can be interesting to see that the leader constructor is neither Apple with its iPhone (17.1% of market share) nor Research in Motion with its Blackberry (20,8%), but Nokia (39,3%, namely 16.2 million Smartphone sold in this third quarter).

Gartner’s report also underlines that, despite these 41 million Smartphone sold in three months, the average selling price is stagnating. According to them, this comes from a slow down in the inventory-reduction efforts of the brands. But they say we can expect pressure on the prices to continue into 2010… well, let’s see what happen, but as far as I’m concerned, I join my hopes to theirs!
